Chambers Ranks Longford Capital Among Top Litigation Finance Firms

CHICAGO, May 18, 2018 - In another signal of the growth and maturity of the litigation finance industry, Chambers and Partners has published its first ranking of litigation finance firms. In its inaugural ranking, Chambers and Partners recognized Longford Capital among the top providers of litigation finance.

Chambers based its judgments on factual information on each firm (total capital, fund structure, leading investors, quality of management, track record, and etc.), commentary from those who have worked with the firm, and the opinions of peers.

Regarding Longford, Chambers noted the blend of experienced trial lawyers and senior investment bankers among its ranks. Market commentators told Chambers, "They are principled folks of the highest integrity and are distinguished by being former trial lawyers, which is a huge benefit to the claim owner and to counsel. What they are well equipped to do is creatively solve issues in structuring funding agreements.”

Chambers and Partners identified Michael Nicolas, co-founder and Managing Director of Longford Capital, as a notable practitioner within the litigation finance industry, relaying comments from the legal industry that included, “[Michael is] super smart, is very principled and does things the right way,” and, “He understands both the financial and the litigation side of the business.”

Michael is responsible for portfolio management, including underwriting, investment selection, and overseeing the efforts of independent attorneys and other professionals as part of the due diligence process. He is a former litigator and partner in the commercial litigation group of Neal, Gerber & Eisenberg, at which he represented companies involved in complex commercial legal disputes.

“Longford works with many of the top law firms in the country to provide funding for portfolios and single-cases across many industries and areas of the law, and we work hard to deliver value to the law firms and clients we serve,” said Michael. “It is affirming and rewarding to know that we’ve won the trust and respect of so many to be identified in Chambers’ survey.”
